Titanium Dioxide
Product Overview: Titanium Dioxide, known chemically as TiO2, is a naturally occurring mineral that is widely used as a pigment and as a physical sunscreen agent. Its unique properties of high refractive index and strong UV light absorption capabilities make it effective in providing broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. It is utilized in its two main forms: rutile and anatase.
Manufacturing Process: The production of Titanium Dioxide involves two primary methods: the sulfate process and the chloride process. Both methods produce pure Titanium Dioxide by extracting it from titanium ore or ilmenite. The final product is then milled to the desired particle size, with smaller particles used for sunscreen applications due to their transparency on the skin.
Family: As a member of the inorganic physical sunscreen family, Titanium Dioxide is celebrated for its ability to reflect, scatter, and absorb UV radiation, offering a physical barrier on the skin’s surface. It is preferred for its stability and minimal risk of irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin and protective formulations.
Uses: Beyond its extensive use in sunscreen lotions, creams, and makeup products for its sun-protective qualities, Titanium Dioxide is also used as a white pigment in paints, coatings, paper, and plastics. Its photocatalytic properties make it useful in air and water purification systems. Additionally, it is employed in the food industry as a coloring agent (E171) in various food products.
Benefits:
- Broad-Spectrum Sun Protection: Provides effective protection against both UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of sunburn and skin cancer.
- Suitable for Sensitive Skin: Known for its low risk of skin irritation and absence of allergic reactions, making it ideal for sensitive skin formulations.
- Photostability: Remains stable under sunlight, ensuring consistent protection during exposure.
- Versatility: Widely used across various industries for its pigmenting, photocatalytic, and UV protection properties.
Production Method and Shelf Life: Manufactured through either the sulfate or chloride process, Titanium Dioxide has an indefinite shelf life when stored properly in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
International Names: While “Titanium Dioxide” is the commonly used term, it may also appear as CI 77891 in cosmetic products, or E171 when used as a food additive.
